Sicilian Blood Oranges belong to the Citrus species, have a rough peel and are typically harvested in wintertime.
On the outside IGP Blood Oranges have a peel whose color varies from green to yellow, from orange to red, according to the ripeness of the fruit and the variety. On the inside they are made up of a sliced juicy pulp whose color varies from orange to red, according to its levels of anthocyanins, an antioxidant that gives pigmentation to the fruit, is a natural aid against ulcers and gastritis and helps the human body to prevent cancer.

PGI Blood Orange is an irreplaceable fruit because of its richness in vitamins and minerals and it’s highly recommended for an healthy and balanced diet.

Thanks to its high levels of Vitamin C (about 40% higher than in blonde oranges), Blood Orange represents a natural medicine.

Soc. Coop. Agr. La Normanna commercializes PGI Sicilian Blood Oranges of the most appreciated varieties:
Moro: it’s the most pigmented variety and it’s often used to produce orange juice. Its ripeness period goes from December to March and it’s originally from Lentini but can be easily found around the whole Catania area.
Sanguinello: it has a nice taste and its color may vary form orange to red. It has a firm peel with reddish shades. It’s mainly produced in Paternò and its ripeness period goes from February to April.
Tarocco: It’s the most appreciated and requested variety on a national level. It’s originally from the Siracusa area but its organoleptic characteristics are enhanced in the fruits produced in the Paternò, Belpasso, Ramacca, Palagonia and Lentini areas. It’s available from December to May.
